By Bass Coast Shire Council - 1st August 2006 - Back to News

Cerebral palsy most commonly affects muscle control, mobility or communication. Every 18 hours a child can be born with or develop CP in early childhood. There is no pre-birth test and no known cure.

The Awareness Week is celebrated nationally and is being spearheaded in Victoria by Scope, a leading service provider.

Chief Executive Officer of Scope, Vici Funnell says the Awareness week is a vital part of their annual program.

"Its about making our community more inclusive, more accessible and more welcoming, so that people with a disability can feel valued and able to participate with a sense of belonging.

"So much more research is needed into the causes of CP," continued Ms Funnell.

"It is currently the most common form of childhood disability in the world."

Anyone wanting to be involved in Cerebral Palsy Awareness Week or needing further information should contact Scope on (03) 9843 3000 or visit the website at www.scopevic.org.au
