Morwell Recreational Reserve takes its final formUpgrading Morwell Recreational Reserve to a high standard sports venue. By news@gippsland - 6th May 2021 - Back to News Morwell Recreation Reserve has entered a new era as a leading regional multisport precinct following the completion of a $9 million redevelopment package. A full-scale refurbishment of the changerooms and associated amenities marked the final phase of works in a major facelift for the Travers Street venue.
Upgrades to the changerooms, grandstand and landscaping at Morwell Recreation Reserve will bring it to a high standard of sporting infrastructure
Upgrading regional level AFL rooms
The latest upgrade produced two regional level AFL rooms – able to split into four smaller rooms – complete with timber bench seating, rubber flooring and soundproofing. Extensions included construction of accessible amenities, showers, toilets, basins and an ice bath location, as well as two new fully equipped umpire change rooms.
Other works included upgrades to the first aid rooms, gym and store rooms, new game day public toilets, grandstand and seating repainting and landscaping to link the building to the new synthetic oval.
Series of transformative upgrades
Traralgon based Langden Constructions led the latest batch of works, engaging a range of local subcontractors including Shields Electrical, Chris Larkin Plumbing, Carpet Country Traralgon, KJM Voice and Data and Valley Glass and Glazing. This caps off a series of transformative upgrades including:
- Keegan Street Reserve redevelopment
- Lighting upgrades
- New synthetic oval
- New netball courts
- Shared cricket and netball pavilion
The Morwell Recreation Reserve redevelopment project was funded by $5 million from the Federal Government and $4 million from the Victorian Government’s $85 million Latrobe Valley Sports and Community Initiative, administered by Latrobe Valley Authority.
Asset for local and major events
Latrobe City Mayor Sharon Gibson said, "These works bring the amenities at Morwell Recreation Reserve in line with the high standard of sporting infrastructure, capping off a range of major upgrades for the facility."
"With this final piece of the puzzle in place for the reserve masterplan, we now boast one of the premier multisport centres in regional Victoria which will be a wonderful asset for local users and major events. Council is grateful for the ongoing support from the state and federal governments enabling us to deliver these fantastic outcomes for our community."
