Northe encourages improved water safetyReminders for water safety this summer By Portal Admin - 13th January 2018 - Back to News Member for Morwell, Russell Northe has urged locals to take care around water and waterways this summer, as the number of drownings across the State continues to rise.
"There have been a number of tragedies already this summer and it’s just so important that active supervision and complete vigilance is adhered to at all times when playing and swimming in and around our waterways" said Mr Northe.
Victoria has recently experienced a 20% increase in the number of drowning deaths compared to the 10 year average, with 45 drowning deaths occurring in the 2016/17 period.
"One death is one too many and we all need to ensure that we and our families are better educated when it comes to water safety" Mr Northe said.
"The water is a huge part of our Australian lifestyle and whilst we enjoy activities in pools, spas, beaches, dams and creeks we must also respect the dangers that come with this lifestyle" said Mr Northe
With temperatures and attendance at pools and beaches rising, Mr Northe said it was imperative that everyone take’s extreme care when around the water this summer.
This includes eliminating risks such as jumping into unknown waters, not swimming between the flags at patrolled beaches and leaving pool or spa gates open, all of which can cause serious injury and/or death.
"I urge all members of the public to take care whilst swimming around the Gippsland waterways this summer" Said Mr Northe
