Brumby’S Working Victoria Website Farce

Latrobe Valley residents are being conned by the Brumby Government’s taxpayer funded, self-congratulatory Working Victoria campaign, Morwell MP Russell Northe said today.

By Russell Northe - 30th September 2009 - Back to News

Mr Northe said he recently accessed the campaign website and found 124 projects listed as supporting the region.

"Upon closer inspection, I discovered that just 19 of these projects specifically benefit the Morwell electorate, 17 of which are federally funded projects that target schools long‑neglected by the Victorian Labor Government" Mr Northe said.

"Of the remaining two projects, one is the duplication of the Princes Highway between Traralgon and Sale, to which the Commonwealth is committing 80 percent of the required funds.

"This means just one of the 124 projects listed under the region is a state government funded initiative with direct benefit to our electorate."

Other projects recorded as benefiting the area include channel deepening in Port Phillip Bay, school improvement projects in Yarra Junction and Wodonga, a program to create additional carpark spaces at metropolitan railway stations, and a Geelong-based service for victims of sexual assault in western Victoria.

The Nationals MP said Latrobe Valley residents deserved better and would not be fooled by the Brumby Government’s shameful antics.

"I am astounded by the depth of deception Mr Brumby has stooped to in this blatant act of self‑promotion," he said.

"The Premier is trying to claim credit where it is clearly not due, passing off federally funded projects as his own and attempting to convince locals that they are to directly gain from numerous Melbourne-based projects.

"The government’s own website proves the Working Victoria campaign is a farce.

"It’s time the Brumby Government concentrated on delivering much needed programs and infrastructure to our region rather than wasting taxpayer’s money with inaccurate and deceitful advertising," Mr Northe said.
