Final Positions Not Set In LVBALast Sunday the action continued in the Edison Mission Energy Latrobe Valley Baseball Association season with round nineteen games By Latrobe Valley Baseball Association - 28th August 2001 - Back to News Last Sunday the action continued in the Edison Mission Energy Latrobe Valley Baseball Association season with round nineteen games. With finals positions still to be determined in all grades the pace was fast and furious. Churchill hosted the ladder leading Traralgon Redsox and the Sale Rangers travelled to Morwell to take on the Cougars.
Morwell scored the first run of the game with scoring difficult early. The Cougars who were disappointing earlier in the season have found form in recent weeks. Simon Dimarco’s triple then helped Sale gain the ascendancy. The Rangers lead 4-2 at the top of the sixth with the game in the balance. Untimely errors in the field allowed Sale to forge ahead with the Cougars unable to answer when it came time to bat. Campbell Wilson, Peter Woodford and Dimarco were the best for Sale in the 9-2 victory. Rory Clark and Garyth Mullet pitched six strikeouts and along with Garth Kay were Morwell’s best.
Sale jumped out of the blocks, partly due to errors in the field by Morwell in the B grade game. Sale who needed to win to keep their chances of finishing first alive, were on top from beginning to end. Sale scored eight unearned runs from twelve scored in the first innings effectively putting the contest beyond doubt. Morwell battled valiantly and halted Sale’s scoring but were unable to put enough runs on the board to seriously threaten. Peter Woolford had three hits and along with Alex Greenwood and Harrison Wraight were the top performers for Sale. Stephen Balesia, Jason Barnes and Nigel Aubrey were the best for the Cougars.
It was an important round for the Redsox with spots in the finals for all grades still a possibility. A win in the A grade game would assure Traralgon of a place in the grand final. This incentive was the driving force as the Redsox hit five home runs for the game. Traralgon scored two runs in their opening dig and with Owen Godenzi pitching three strikeouts in Churchill’s first bat the signs were ominous. Brett Sharp lit up the Traralgon bats in the second with his first of two home runs. Scoring seven runs and batting through twelve batters including Davis Long who hit seven fouls but managed to stay alive. The game was quickly slipping away from the Braves. Churchill then found their feet scoring four runs over the next two digs. Once again the powerful Traralgon bats took control with Davis Long, Ross Brooker, Godenzi and Sharp adding home runs. A change of pitcher then dried the runs up when it came time for Churchill to bat. Gillespie and Cranwell were the best for the Braves, while Davis Long finished a triple short of a cycle and Peter McLean continued his good form batting a 1000 for the Redsox.
Traralgon won the B grade game with consistent batting and near error free fielding. Luke Hornstra had three hits, Wells Humphrey and Wayne Beames had two hits and Jude Power and Adam Daniel both had home runs.
The C grade game was a must win for Traralgon as they faced the third placed Braves. In a high scoring contest Churchill were in control after heavy scoring in their second dig. In a match where both teams were getting through their batters, Traralgon rested control. Daryll Hunter led the way with five hits and was supported by Matt Toms with four in the Redsox victory.
Although the Redsox were two players short in the under 18 contest they were still able to snatch victory through great fielding and batting. Cary Humphrey and Luke Hornstra led the bats with four safe hits each. In what is likely to be a warm-up to a likely finals match the under 14 game had Traralgon ahead after three digs. The young Churchill team then showed great maturity to real them in and take control of the contest to win 12-6. Nick Quenalt lead Traralgon in the field and Shannon Grass had three hits.
This Sunday sees the last round of the Edison Mission Energy Latrobe Valley Baseball Association take place. With final positions still to be determined the action will be tense and exciting. Traralgon hosts Moe/Newborough, Churchill travels to Sale to play the Rangers and the Yarram Stealers battle Morwell. The public is welcome.
