Students prove web-savvy skills in the real world

Local students confirmed their talents in cyberspace last week when their projects for the innovative school to business program, ‘Webs for Business by Kids’ was showcased at a presentation night held at Kernot Hall.

The 2005 ‘Webs for Business by Kids’ program has been a highly successful program, linking local businesses with young students who are participating in certificates II and III in Information Technology and Multi-Media VET in schools.

Praised as one of the most innovative school to business programs in Gippsland, ‘Webs for Business by Kids’ was initiated by Telstra Country Wide Gippsland following previous successful pilots.

The program has been a partnership between the Baw Baw Latrobe LLEN’s Local Community Partnership and Telstra Country Wide’s Gippsland office, with Latrobe City and Chris Humphrey’s Office National sponsoring this year’s program.

The program links young people in schools with local businesses in order to develop a web page which reflects the needs of the business.

Students spend time with small business owners and local government agency managers, gathering information to learn about the daily operation of their business.

Structured Workplace Learning Co-ordinator for the Baw Baw Latrobe Local Learning and Employment Network Inc, Michelle Weatherall, explained that students are then well equipped to design a web page to meet the business needs.

"Each web page is custom designed to a specific business. Students therefore develop their skills in information technology and multimedia and increase their awareness of life in the workplace," Ms Weatherall said.

"I think it is an innovative program where both students and business owners benefit. The partnership has opened many opportunities for meaningful and relevant interaction between schools and businesses," Ms Weatherall said.

Traralgon based restaurant, Neilsons, was one business that had a web page designed during the program. According to owner Brad Neilson, the program was excellent.

"The students who designed my new web page did so in a mature, confident and willing manner, and the final outcome truly reflects the ambiance of our business. The whole project took about two months to complete with additional links to wine and art pages. I am extremely pleased, and my new web page will be used extensively," Mr Neilson said.

Area manager for Telstra Country Wide Gippsland, Jane Oakley, said Telstra is very proud to be supporting this worthwhile program as part of its ongoing commitment to the Gippsland community. "We are also pleased to have partnered the Baw Baw Latrobe LLEN in offering businesses a chance to tap into the skills and knowledge of local youth," Ms Oakley said.

The ‘Webs for Business by Kids’ project was launched in partnership with the Baw Baw Latrobe Local Learning and Employment Network earlier this year as part of the Gippsland Innovation Festival.
