Actress Sigrid Thornton was the star attraction for a new project designed to attract film producers to Gippsland.

By Wellington Shire Council - 4th June 2007 - Back to News

The project was launched at Nyerimilang Homestead, Metung by the Ms Thornton who starred in the SeaChange TV Series, the Man from Snowy River feature film and many other film and television role.

Film Victoria has provided funds to the six Gippsland Council’s - Bass Coast, Baw Baw, East Gippsland, Latrobe City, South Gippsland and Wellington Shire – for the new website to attract film production companies.

Cr Bob Wenger representing Wellington Shire Council at the event said Gippsland has much to offer film makers.

"We have a diverse range of lakes, mountains, waterways, forests, national parks and islands for location filming.

We have the High country, the Great Dividing Range, Strzelecki Ranges and a huge expanse of coastline stretching from Phillip Island in the west and taking in the Ninety Mile beach all the way to the NSW border," said Cr Wenger

"Gippsland covers 20% of the state. With Councils working together we can create great opportunities for our region," said Cr Wenger

"The new film location website is a great way to spread the word about Gippsland not only across Australia but internationally as well. It shows we have a prefect setting for filming features, series or commercials."

The new website includes information about ‘The Tender Hook’, a film starring Hugo Weaving that was partly shot at the historic Swing Bridge in Longford.

Spokesperson for the project Andrea Court said the whole of Gippsland and its vast number of locations are ideal for making films whether features or documentaries.

"The region is natural and unspoiled and offers enormous variety," she said.

"They include the natural environment including mountains, rivers, lakes, beaches, wilderness as well as historical townships, industrial complexes, railways and many other ‘ingredients’ for film making."

Andrea said that Gippsland also offered excellent clear natural light and a continuity of good weather.

"All the support infrastructure needed to make films is also available throughout the region," she said.

Andrea said the website would mean that more than 1000 images of Gippsland would be at the fingertips of film producers around the world.

"The site will also contain all the other details film makers need to know about including availability of locally sourced ‘extras’, film processing, prop makers, hair stylists, make up artists and so on.

"It will provide an A-Z rundown of everything a film producer needs to know about the region and the types of movie productions that they are best suited for."

Andrea said each of the Gippsland councils was pooling their photographic resources.

"After studying these we will determine what additional images are needed and commission photographers to shoot them.
