Graham Street South Dudley Road Roundabout

Work has begun on a new roundabout at the intersection of Graham Street, South Dudley Road and West Area Road in Wonthaggi.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 10th December 2009 - Back to News

The roundabout is part of the upgrade to the road network in Wonthaggi to deal with increased road traffic from construction of the desalination plant.

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Infrastructure Director, Steve Piasente, said the contract to construct the roundabout has been awarded to Sure Constructions (Vic) Pty Ltd.

"This is a $1.24 million dollar project, which we expect will take four months to complete," confirmed Mr Piasente.

"The roundabout will be approximately 21 metres wide, which is considerably bigger than the one in Billson Street, as it needs to cater for larger vehicles.

"As part of the project, the footpaths within West Area Road, outside the hospital and along to Coalfields Caravan Park will be upgraded and the existing footpath into Guide Park will be moved, to ensure that pedestrians are not too close to the new roundabout.

"There will also be an upgrade to the pedestrian refuge and the bus stop area opposite Rose Lodge," Mr Piasente continued.

"New street lighting will be installed, including putting the existing overhead power lines underground. West Area and Webb Roads will be sealed as part of this project, which will hopefully lessen the impact of the expected traffic."

"The cost of roundabout project will be reimbursed by the State Government, as part of the $12 million commitment they made to road improvements around the desalination plant," explained Mr Piasente.

Access to Wonthaggi Hospital will be maintained throughout the construction period.

"Council and Sure Constructions will do everything we can to make sure that disruption to businesses and residents in the area is minimised," assured Mr Piasente.

"There will be an alternative traffic entrance for the Hospital and we ask that everyone follows any temporary traffic rules on the site. This will ensure the safety of the public and the workers."

It is anticipated that construction of the roundabout will be complete in time for Wonthaggi Centerary parade scheduled for 20 March 2010.
