Wellington remembers …The haunting sound of The Last Post echoes in the hills of Carrajung as people bow their heads and remember those who gave their lives so that future generations may live in freedom. By Wellington Shire Council - 17th August 2005 - Back to News When the music finishes, there’s a minute’s silence and all you can hear is the wind rustling its way through the treetops.
It’s the day before the 60th anniversary of VP Day - Victory in the Pacific Day also known as Victory over Japan or VJ Day which marked the end of World War II – and locals have gathered at Carrajung Memorial Park for a special Dedication Service to unveil two new black, marble plaques.
The project started a while back when Yarram RSL Sub-Branch President Jim Kemsley noticed Carrajung’s original white marble plaque urgently needed replacing. Apparently, it was so old, the writing had started to turn pink.
The sub-branch, with the support of Wellington Shire Council, successfully approached the Department of Veterans Affairs to secure $1250 funding to upgrade the memorial.
Speaking at the service, Wellington Councillor Jeff Amos said: "The new plaques recognise the courage of the citizens of Carrajung who have fallen in World War I, World War II and subsequent conflicts. They also remind us that our nation is capable of the most extraordinary achievements."
"My congratulations also to the Carrajung community, who removed the gates, then stripped and repainted them in time for the Dedication Service – and what a remarkable job they have done."
During the Dedication Service, local clergymen bless the plaques. Councillor Amos and fellow Councillor Ian Onley then speak about the anniversary of VP Day.
Councillor Amos said it was highly appropriate that the service was conducted on the eve of VP Day.
"Today we stand here safe and free. All the things we pride in this great country – liberty, security, opportunity, the privileges of citizenship – we owe to those men and women who fought, endured, suffered and died for us and Australia.
"Their efforts have helped preserve the lifestyle we treasure here in Carrajung and the surrounding district."
There were several RSL services in Wellington on Sunday to mark VP Day with Cr Peter Garlick laying a wreath at a Sale RSL Commemorative Service and Cr Charles McCubbin laying a wreath at a Briagolong RSL service.
Wellington Mayor Peter Gault will attend a special Sale RSL Dawn Service at the Sale Memorial Hall Forecourt on Thursday, August 18, to mark the anniversary of Vietnam Veteran’s Day.
