Residents and visitors can celebrate Australia Day at locations across Bass Coast Shire on Monday 26 January 2009.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 16th January 2009 - Back to News

Events will be held in Wonthaggi, Cowes, Inverloch, Pound Creek, Kernot, Glen Alvie and Corinella giving the community a chance to celebrate life in Australia.

Council’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, Steve Piesente, said Australia Day is a time to recognise excellence and community service as well as welcoming new citizens to the country.

"This is a day when the community comes together and celebrates what makes being an Australian great," said Mr Piesente.

"It is an opportunity to celebrate our diversity and what makes us all the same – enjoying life in Australia.

"At citizenship ceremonies in Cowes and Wonthaggi, nine residents will become our region’s newest Australian citizens."

Wonthaggi celebrations kick off with a free breakfast at 7.30am followed by the official proceedings.

"The Wonthaggi event will culminate in the announcement and presentation of the 2009 Bass Coast Australia Day Awards," said Mr Piesente.

"Our Australia Day Ambassador, Dan Romanis, is speaking at both the Cowes and Wonthaggi celebrations.

"Dan is an inspirational Australian who was awarded the Centenary Medal for Service to the Australian Society through his work with the Royal District Nursing Service."

From 10.30am in Cowes you can get a free brunch, join in pony rides and mural painting with the Monet Sisters.

"Australia Day in Inverloch takes on an aquatic theme with the Surf Club hosting the Inlet Swim Classic at 7.30am followed by a flag raising ceremony," said Mr Piasente.

"There will also be barbeques at Corinella, Glen Alvie and Pound Creek and a community breakfast in Kernot.

"We hope everyone can get along and help celebrate Australian life in 2009," said Mr Piesente.

Details of Australia Day celebrations are also available on Council’s website (www.basscoast.vic.gov.au). For more information, contact Sarah Male on 1300 BCOAST (226 278).
