Nats Put Up $5,000 For Student Fund The Nationals Member for Morwell Russell Northe is encouraging Latrobe Valley students to apply for The Nationals Scholarship for Young Leaders. By Russell Northe - 24th November 2009 - Back to News Mr Northe said the scholarship was open to students between the ages of 16 to 25 who were applying for their first year of university.
"I encourage all Latrobe Valley students who are undertaking tertiary study in 2010 to consider applying for The Nationals Young Leaders Scholarship," Mr Northe said.
"Successful applicants will share in $5000, designed to help them cover some of the costs of higher education."
Mr Northe said The Nationals recognised the high costs young people in regional Victoria faced when moving to Melbourne to study.
"A number of recent reports have highlighted the barriers young people in regional Victoria face when they pursue tertiary education," Mr Northe said.
"Accessing higher education is now even more difficult as a result of the Federal Labor Government’s proposed Youth Allowance changes.
"The changes will require students to work 30 hours a week for up to two years to qualify for independent Youth Allowance.
"The Rudd Government’s harsh eligibility criteria will leave many Latrobe Valley students unable to access financial assistance after they finish year 12.
"Many will have to defer their place at university for at least two years.
"Without financial assistance, many young people simply cannot afford to pay the $20,000 it takes students to relocate to Melbourne.
"The Nationals scholarship is a positive contribution to helping country students overcome the economic barriers which might prevent them from gaining a tertiary qualification," Mr Northe said.
