Adult literacy collection expands

Wellington Shire Council library service is expanding the adult literacy collection.

By Wellington Shire Council - 25th July 2006 - Back to News

"We have had an adult literacy collection for many years but found there was a need for a broader range of quality materials" said Cathy Carr, Wellington Shire Council’s Library Support Coordinator.

"TAFE and ACES both provide successful programs for the basic teaching of adult literacy, but both these organisations and the Fulham Correctional Facility found there was a lack material available for leisure reading for people with low English language or low reading skills," said Ms Carr.

The core collection has been expanded to 250 books, including both fiction and non-fiction titles that contain suitable adult content.

"We will be asking users for feedback and information about preferred titles and genre to help us select more books" said Ms Carr.

"These resources provide inspiration for people to engage in reading as a recreational activity, not just an educational necessity. It has been long identified that even basic reading skills cannot be learned properly without enjoyment. "

"Adult literacy is a very important to our community. People with low literacy skills have a harder time finding employment and advancing their education," Ms Carr.

A full list of titles in the collection is available through the online catalogue at www.wellington.vic.gov.au/library.

Both ACES and the TAFE can provide courses and assistance for those wishing to improve their literacy.

For more information about the adult literacy collection please contact Cathy Carr, Library Support Coordinator, Wellington Shire Council 1300 366 244.
