Bass Coast Celebrates Australia Day

Australia Day celebrations will take place at four locations across the Bass Coast Shire on Friday 26 January.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 16th January 2007 - Back to News

Wonthaggi, Inverloch, Pound Creek and Cowes will all hold events commemorating the day that Captain Arthur Phillip unfurled the British flag at Sydney Cove in 1788.

Australia Day was officially formed in 1946 when the various states and territories of Australia agreed to observe the same National Day. Since then, Australia Day has become a focal point in celebrating life in Australia, recognising excellence and community service and welcoming new citizens to this country.

2007 is no exception, said Richard Perry, Acting Chief Executive Officer of Bass Coast Shire Council.

"Bass Coast celebrations will kick off with a breakfast at the Wonthaggi Union Arts Centre, followed by a flag raising ceremony in Inverloch, a barbeque lunch in Pound Creek and a ceremony on the Cowes foreshore from 1pm," confirmed Mr Perry.

"Council and a number of community groups are working together on the celebrations across the day."

Bass Coast’s Australia Day Ambassador, Mr Bob Falconer AMP, will be in attendance at the Wonthaggi and Cowes events.

"Mr Falconer is a former Police Commissioner and is currently a member of the Victorian Community Council on Crime and Violence," said Mr Perry.

"He is also the Chairman of STOPline Pty Ltd, who works with organisations in both the public and private sectors, to enhance corporate governance.

"Mr Falconer has certainly made an amazing contribution to his community and we are very happy that he’ll be able to join us at the official proceedings."

The recipients of the Bass Coast Shire Australia Day awards will be announced at Wonthaggi and Cowes.

"There will also be citizenship ceremonies taking place at these two locations," said Mr Perry.

"The community are all invited to come along and join in the celebrations."
