Peter Credlin, Chairperson of the Tyers and District Community Association, said that now is the time for stall holders to sign on. "A Farmers’ Market is about introducing shoppers to home-grown, local produce. The interaction between stall holders and customers is on a much more personal basis. People like food that is truly fresh and the market will allow people to ask about how a wine is made, or how organic blueberries are grown, or even what makes someone’s carrots taste so good," Mr Credlin said. "With a dedicated committee lead by Anne Jones, and having contracted the services of Peter Arnold, a leading expert in the field, our plans are well in place for the October opening. We are looking for interested stall holders to confirm their involvement," Mr Credlin said. Supported by Latrobe City Council and co-ordinated by the Tyers and District Community Association, the farmers’ market will join the Gippsland club of monthly farmers’ markets which will include Koonwarra, Drouin, According to Leo Billington, Latrobe City Investment Manager, the Tyers Farmers’ Market will be held on a monthly basis, the first being planned for "Farmers’ Markets are unique because it is home-grown produce being sold. Craft items are not included therefore allowing shoppers to interact closer with the growers and makers of the produce. Food knowledge is transferred in a more meaningful and interesting way," Mr Billington said. "These markets are also incubators for local businesses. A new customer base and new sales outlets are established. Already there is interest from growers of blueberries, hazelnuts, most vegetables and fruit, along with makers of an array of pickles, sauces and preserves," Mr Billington added. Mr Billington explained that Peter Arnold will assist in setting up the first two markets at Tyers and it is Peter to whom all enquires should be made by anyone who wants to become involved. "Entry to these markets is free but stall holders are charged a nominal fee for a 12 square metre site at the Bert Christiansen Reserve, right in the centre of Tyers," Mr Billington said. "With Gippsland’s fresh food industry enjoying a strong reputation of late, the Tyers Farmers’ Market is an excellent opportunity for the local community to see, smell and taste how green our valley is," Mr Billington concluded. Enquiries about the Tyers Farmers’ Market should be made to Peter Arnold on 5664 0096 or 0439 364 760. Source: http://gippsland.com/ Published by: news@gippsland.com Related Articles
