Ex-service associations and local communities in the Gippsland electorate are being urged to apply for funding to restore war memorials and honour rolls.

The Nationals Member for Gippsland Province, PETER HALL, said the State Government grants program will assist communities to ensure that monuments to those who sacrificed their lives during war are protected for future generations.

Grants of up to $7000 are being offered to eligible organisations to restore, repair and protect memorials.

"Memorials and honour rolls are our way of respecting and commemorating those soldiers who fought and died for the freedom and way of life we now enjoy," he said.

"This funding project aims to protect these places of community and historical importance for future generations to respect."

"As I have travelled around the electorate and other parts of

country Victoria, it is evident that many of the monuments would benefit by a refurbishment."

Mr Hall said $500,000 has been allocated by the Government as part of the program.

"I would urge local RSL branches, service clubs and councils to assess their memorials and form a partnership to apply for funding as part of a community project.

"Through the involvement of schools or youth groups, it may also be possible to improve local knowledge of the memorial's history and significance to the community."

Projects which will not be eligible for funding include new memorials and existing avenues of honour.

Mr Hall said organisations which would like further information about the grants should visit www.grants.dvc.vic.gov.au or contact his electorate office on 5174 7066.
