Leisure Centre Tired Of GraffitiOver the last four months, the Phillip Island Leisure Centre has been subject to three specific episodes of graffiti. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 28th August 2006 - Back to News Bass Coast YMCA Manager, Andrew McKinnon, says the incidents, consisting of aerosol spray paint tagging, have escalated over recent times.
"Traditionally these kind of episodes have occurred mainly during school holiday periods, especially around the skate park," said Mr McKinnon.
"However, the most recent weekend strike was well outside these times."
Mr McKinnon said the graffiti is not usually offensive, but it is unsightly.
"It’s substantial in size and costly to remove," said Mr McKinnon.
"It can take the YMCA’s Facility Services team up to five hours to remove.
"And with repainting costing $300 to $400 each time, this is rapidly becoming an expensive exercise."
Mr McKinnon confirmed that the graffiti episodes were having an impact on the Centre’s budget.
"This kind of behaviour is wasting the community’s money," said Mr McKinnon.
"This money could fund extra programs at the Skate Park, or be spent on Leisure Centre facilities.
"Instead we have to use it to clean up the graffiti, so our community really is missing out because of this."
Previously confined to the side and rear of the building, the perpetrators have started climbing onto the roof of the Centre, defacing the façade with various ‘tags’.
"YMCA Skate Park supervisors have talked with the regular local skate park goers about the graffiti," said Mr McKinnon.
"They’ve been told that these tags are not designed by locals.
"Both the YMCA and the local police will continue to monitor the situation."
Council and the YMCA are appealing to the local community for assistance. Anyone with information should contact the YMCA or Cowes Police Station.
