Greens Policy To Result In Animal DumpingDomestic animals will be cruelly disposed of under policy released by The Greens, Shadow Minister for Country Victoria Philip Davis said today. By Phillip Davis - 29th August 2006 - Back to News Mr Davis said The Greens animals policy advocates restricting the sale of live companion animals to authorised and regulated breeders only.
"This policy will ultimately result in animal dumping," he said.
"If people are banned from selling domestic animals to others, the only way to dispose of these animals will be to dump them.
"Our animal shelters will be inundated with unwanted companion animals that could have been adopted into loving homes through the sale to others.
"Other animals won’t be so lucky and will be either dumped or killed.
"Families who want to include a pet dog or cat into their families but cannot afford to purchase through a registered breeder will miss out, while these animals are abandoned or killed."
Mr Davis said Victoria already has a serious problem with unwanted animals.
"Our shelters are already full and thousands of animals are euthanased every week," he said.
"If pet owners are banned from selling their puppies or kittens to friends or through their local newspapers, already stretched animal shelters will be forced to take the brunt.
"Every companion animal deserves a loving home.
"These homes are not necessarily only found through registered breeders.
"The Greens policy is ill-conceived and impractical."
