Printmaking Exhibition Cuts A Striking Image At The GalleryCombine two artists and one printmaker, and three is no longer a crowd. Now showing at the Latrobe Regional Gallery Three is not a crowd celebrates a three-way collaboration between artist, By Latrobe City - 5th July 2012 - Back to News printmaker and collector as well as the connections formed between Latrobe Valley and Cairns.
Latrobe Regional Gallery’s senior curator, Fiona West, said that early in 2011 local artist and printmaker Kate Zizys was granted an eight week printing residency through the KickArts organisation in Cairns, North Queensland.
"During this residency, Zizys worked with Torres Strait Islander artists Brian Robinson and Joel Sam to produce a series of 11 linocuts on paper.
"Family totems and Torres Strait Islander culture inspire Sam’s artworks. He depicts imagery of the creatures that live in and around the Torres Strait Islands, such as turtles, dugongs, the fish of the reef and the shells and corals of the Coral Sea.
"In response to the natural disasters that beset Queensland in early 2011, his recent linocut works focus on weather patterns and cycles, along with other forces of nature, as these are of a high cultural importance both in past and present days," Fiona concluded.
"Robinson is a multi-skilled contemporary artist, whose practice includes painting, printmaking, sculpture and design. The graphic style in his practice combines his Torres Strait Islander heritage with a strong passion for experimentation, both in theoretical approach and medium, as well as crossing the boundaries between reality and fantasy. The results intertwine styles as diverse as graffiti art through to intricate relief carvings and construction sculpture echoing images of Torres Strait Islander cultural motifs, objects and activity," Ms West concluded.
Three is not a crowd continues until 5 August 2012.
