Hayley Brown from Moe has been competing in athletics events since the age of eight and has built up an impressive resume of times and results across many disciplines. Now at age 14 she has been chosen to represent Australia at a series of athletics events in Nevada, United States in March 2006.

Hayley was invited into the Australian squad after an impressive finish at the Victorian All Schools State Finals at Meadowglen in October last year. Hayley ran the 100m in 13.56 seconds and has since improved her time to 13.10 seconds.

During the 18 day tour, the Australian squad comprising over 20 talented young Australians, will compete in five competitions, taking part in both sprinting and jumping events.

Hayley works hard at her training and has her sights set on an Olympic place in the future.

"As well as training at Moe Little Athletics, I am also a member of the Gippsland Senior Athletics squad and a member of the Gippsland Academy of Sport Athletic Team. This involves a training day, every two weeks or so, where we get to work with professional athletes who coach us," Hayley said.

"With all this training, and with the opportunity to compete in the States, representing Australia means that I am more keen than ever to get into the Commonwealth or Olympic Games squads. I love to run the 100m sprint and this is my best event so I am working really hard on my times," Hayley added.

To get to the States, Hayley needs to raise $6000 and she is busy planning a fundraising campaign including a raffle, car washing and selling chocolates. She is keen to attract sponsorship from local businesses and has sent a letter to many organisations in the hope of raising the much needed funds.

Hayley says that wherever she competes she is always a proud ambassador for the Latrobe Valley and her own athletics club in Moe.

"The trip to the States will be the pinnacle of my career to date and I am excited to be representing Australia and Latrobe City around the other side of the world," Hayley concluded.
