Grantville Glen Alvie Roadworks Almost CompleteWork on the Grantville Glen Alvie Road between Dohertys Road and the Pittsburgh quarry is almost complete. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 27th April 2009 - Back to News The project was extended to include a further 2.1 kilometres between the Shuntoff and Pittsburgh Quarry. The total length of road constructed is 4 kilometres.
Bass Coast Shire Council’s Infrastructure Director, Steven Piasente, said the improvements would improve the safety of the road.
"The works involved widening the road and shoulders as well as improving drainage on both sides of the road," said Mr Piasente.
"The intersection at the Shuntoff has been widened to improve sight distances and provide a right hand turning lane.
"The new road is much wider and this means improved safety for cars and the heavy vehicles using the nearby quarries," Mr Piasente explained.
The construction work on the Bass Highway duplication had a significant impact on this stretch of road.
"There was a lot of heavy traffic on this section of road as trucks travelled from the quarries to the Highway duplication works," Mr Piasente confirmed.
"The road was deteriorating very quickly, so we decided to extend our roadworks to include the section from the Shuntoff to Pittsburgh quarry.
"VicRoads also approved relocating the 80 kilometre speed sign further up the hill which will improve safety in the residential area," continued Mr Piasente.
"We thank the local residents for their tolerance while works were being undertaken. The project has certainly delivered a good outcome for the Grantville community."
The works were scheduled in this year’s Capital Works budget and were funded through the Roads to Recovery program.
Work on the remaining section between Bass Highway and Dohertys Road will be scheduled at a later date.
