Second Planning Workshop For Smith’S Beach And Surrounds

The second community planning workshop for Smiths Beach, Sunderland Bay, Surf Beach and Sunset Strip will take place at the Cowes Cultural Centre on Saturday, 29 August 2009.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 20th August 2009 - Back to News

The workshop will run from 2.00pm until 4.30pm and includes afternoon tea. Bass Coast Shire Council’s Community Planning Facilitator, Paul Greco, said members of all these communities are invited to attend.

"We have had a very strong response to the community planning project from these communities," confirmed Mr Greco.

"Our first workshop in June was attended by 45 people. Another 200 people, unable to attend the workshop, were still able to participate by responding to a questionnaire.

"That initial workshop gave people the opportunity to discuss what they valued about their local area and list the problems that they face," Mr Greco explained.

"At this session, the community will begin to set down the outline of their plan. This involves outlining the key priorities and projects, based on the information gathered at the first workshop and through the survey."

Mr Greco said that everyone was welcome at the sessions and it was not necessary to have attended the first workshop to be involved.

"People can get involved at any point in this process," said Mr Greco.

"People are getting together to assess the needs, challenges and issues their communities face, and identify projects that address these issues.

"This information is drawn together in a Community Plan that is owned and driven by the local community," said Mr Greco.

"Having a plan that is driven by the community is very important and there are considerable benefits to going through this process.

These include:

• Increased community participation and engagement

• A stronger sense of ‘community’

• Increased skills and confidence

• Increased awareness of local community resources

• More community resources

"So please, if you are part of these communities, come to the workshop on 29 August," encouraged Mr Greco.

"Bring along your neighbours, help prepare your local Community Plan and develop networks and friendships in the process."

The workshop will be held on Saturday, 29 August from 2.00pm - 4.30pm at the Cowes Cultural Centre, 91-97 Thompson Avenue, Cowes. Afternoon tea will be provided.
