By Portal Admin - 12th August 2016 - Back to News Discreet Montage seeks to highlight the innovative and experimental visions of Barry Brown and Irene Proebsting, two artists from the Gippsland region, that have had diverse artistic practices both collaboratively and individually.
Latrobe City Council’s arts director, Dr Mark Themann, said that the artists’ early practices were very much influenced by the industrial and rural settings of the Latrobe Valley.
"As they continued to pursue their commitment to the photographic, to sound and to the moving image medium, they also witnessed technological changes within contemporary visual and filmic practices over the last few decades. They harbour an increasingly rare historical awareness in regards to the developments of what is now known as 'experimental film', the 'interdisciplinary', or 'new media'.
"The six works shown in this exhibition cover the years 1995 to 2013 and showcase Brown and Proebsting's collection of Super 8mm films. These films range from Field, a landscape montage which utilizes overexposure, reflections and composed shots, to Harmonic Ghosts, a random montage of otherworldly ruptures and everyday illusions," Dr Themann said.
"Over the years Brown and Proebsting have pushed the boundaries of experimental film, and the Latrobe Regional Gallery is thrilled to be able to present their program of poetic documentaries, in which the everyday, the sublime and the uncanny meet, in a beautiful, and at times ecstatic lament," Dr Themann concluded.
Discreet Montage runs until 2 October 2016.
