Wellington Celebrates International Day Of People With A Disability

Wellington Shire Council is celebrating the International Day of People with a Disability on Wednesday 29 November 2006.

"This event is a celebration of ability. It is about recognising people in our community who have a disability and the contribution that they make to our community" said Cr Malcolm Hole, Mayor of Wellington Shire Council

There will be a display and show bags at the Gippsland Centre, Sale on the day and there is free travel all week on the low floor bus to help celebrate the event.

A Festival of Short Films will also be held at the Sale Cinema. Admission will be free.

Films range from comedy to documentary to animations and digital storytelling.

Films include:


• How to Eat an Elephant • Drifting in Antarctica

• Big Hearted Kid              • When Deaf Minds Travel

• Absolution                      • The Brown Dressing Gown

• Special People                • Sharing Stories

• Cousin (by Adam Elliot, who also created the Academy Award winning Harvie Krumpet)

The films will be two sessions, starting at 11am and 1pm - all films will be shown only once.

"These activities will hopefully increase awareness in our community about the achievements of people with a disability and the additional challenges they face" said Cr Hole.

Travel on the low floor bus will be free throughout the week, from Monday 27 November to Friday 1 December. The low floor bus has routes covering Sale, Stratford and the Coast.
