Bass Coast Shire Council is seeking expressions of interest to join our newly formed BMX, Pump Track and Mountain Bike Reference Group. Council receives many requests from our community for new BMX and pump tracks, as well as mountain bike trails, so is looking to create a strategy to determine the best locations for these much-requested amenities.

Deadline of submission of Expressions of interest for the new BMX, Pump Track and Mountain Bike Reference Group will be on 6 April 2023

Community-led bike strategy

Interest in these popular sports continues to rise. Combined with our growing population, as new families move into Bass Coast, there is a need to cater for our younger generation with suitable recreational services - especially younger riders.

Therefore, council is now looking to establish a community led reference group to help develop a strategy to meet the needs of our BMX, pump track and mountain bike riders. Under this strategy, the reference group will aid council with determining suitable locations for new tracks across the Shire plus best-practise designs and masterplans.

A consultant will closely collaborate with the reference group and council officers, to deliver this strategy in 2023. Members are asked to commit to a minimum 12-month term, with a maximum of three years, and four meetings a year at least.

Bike-focused community connection

Bass Coast Shire Council Mayor, Cr Michael Whelan said: "This new reference group will provide a vital voice for the Bass Coast BMX and Mountain Bike community within council. It will allow the council to fully understand what riders need, and how we can deliver best-in-class facilities.

"By creating the BMX, Pump Track and Mountain Bike Track Reference Group, council is meeting our strategic objectives of cultivating a healthy, inclusive community plus strengthening the connection between people and our shared public spaces." Cr Whelan said.

Youthful outdoor adventure

Cr Whelan added, "These scenes encourage young people to get outside, get fit, explore their local area, be creative, develop resilience, to focus and practise, while building mental agility and strong friendships. By creating council-managed, open spaces for BMX, mountain bike and other riders we increase safety, encourage more inclusivity, and help folks have a lot more fun."

Council invites everyone interested to apply, as we are seeking 12 diverse members across locations, ages, demographics and interests. Deadline for applications is Thursday 6 April. For more information visit the BMX/Pump Track/Mountain Bike Reference Group page.
