South Gippsland Planning Scheme Review of first stage approved highlighting four-year strategic priorities in coastal strategy and urban design in mandated review cycle

The first stage of South Gippsland's Planning Scheme Review has been completed with the adoption of the Review at Wednesday's council meeting. The Review must be undertaken every four years and provides council with the opportunity to highlight priority strategic work council will progress over the next four years. This time around, South Gippsland Shire Council took the opportunity to invest in a fully comprehensive review of the scheme, something that has not been completed for over 10 years.

Community input was gathered, highlighting priorities like the Coastal Strategy and urban design. The next step: a planning scheme amendment

South Gippsland planning review

The review identified opportunities to strengthen South Gippsland's strategic planning scheme and supporting policies to ensure the attributes we all love about our unique townships are preserved for the future, and that growth is responsibly managed. The Review also cleared up some inconsistencies to help make it easier to use and understand the Planning Scheme.

Council also sought community feedback on the Review to ensure our community felt informed and had the opportunity to let us know of any issues that we needed to address.

Review highlights

The adopted Planning Scheme Review highlights some key further strategic work that will need to be prioritised, including:

• Completing the Coastal Strategy and include or change any planning controls if required
• Considering how we guide urban design to keep township character
• Considering how we protect our rural resources and landscapes from inappropriate development by preparing a Rural Landscapes Strategy
• Planning for Nyora's future growth and infrastructure as an emerging township
• Reviewing what triggers a planning permit so that unnecessary applications are avoided
• Ensuring we have enough supply of industrial land by developing an Industrial Land Use Strategy
• Identifying how we best protect heritage assets
• Resolving a Memorandum of Understanding with South Gippsland Water to remove them as the referral authority for unplumbed domestic sheds more than 30 metres from a waterway

Appreciating community feedback

Cr Nathan Hersey, Mayor South Gippsland Shire Council said, "Thank you to everyone who provided their feedback as part of the review of South Gippsland's Planning Scheme."

"Council staff will soon prepare an amendment to our Planning Scheme - the final step to get the changes highlighted in the report adopted. This is a long process, but at the end we will have a more robust Planning Scheme for South Gippsland," Cr Hersey said.
