Yarragon Township Plan and Urban Design Framework adopted by Baw Baw Shire Council
Council officially endorses the Yarragon Township Plan and Urban Design Framework, a crucial advancement in regional strategic planning. The adopted plan reflects community aspirations for sustainable growth and town character preservation.
Baw Baw Shire Council has officially adopted the Yarragon Township Plan and Urban Design Framework, marking a significant milestone in the region's strategic planning and development. The adoption follows a robust community consultation process, reflecting the aspirations of Yarragon's residents for sustainable growth and the preservation of the town's unique character.
In response to community input on town centre character, the Urban Design Framework, now a standalone document, was detailed by Blom Design. Adopted for formal changes in the Baw Baw Planning Scheme
Adopted plan highlights
The Township Plan provides a strategic vision for Yarragon, setting out actionable strategies to guide development over the coming decades, while the Urban Design Framework offers detailed design and public realm guidelines to enhance the town centre, including its commercial and industrial areas. Highlights of the adopted plan include:
- A vision for Yarragon that prioritises natural environment protection, community heritage, and a diverse economy
- Six strategic objectives to ensure growth that is respectful, community-focused, and resilient
- A dedicated Urban Design Framework addressing town centre enhancements, infrastructure improvement, and landscape integration
- Consideration of community feedback obtained through extensive consultation across multiple phases, including drop-in sessions, public markets, and digital platforms
Financially, the council has responsibly planned for the implementation of the recommendations within the framework, with a budget allocation of $120,000 for the Plan and an additional $10,000 for the Urban Design Framework.
Sustainable development initiative
Environmental stewardship is at the forefront of the initiative, with further work identified to support the Environmental Sustainability Strategy 2022 and undertake updated flood modelling and drainage strategies. "The Yarragon Township Plan and Urban Design Framework represent more than just a blueprint for development; they embody our community's aspirations for a future that honours our heritage while embracing growth," says Mayor of Baw Baw Shire Cr Annemarie McCabe.
"They balance development needs with environmental conservation and community values. As we look to the years ahead, these comprehensive frameworks will ensure that Yarragon remains a vibrant and sustainable place to live, work, and visit," Ms McCabe said.
