Danny O’Brien cites Winnindoo CFA station delays and cost blowouts despite long-promised funding since 2020

Danny O’Brien says Labor mismanagement is causing CFA station delays, cost blowouts and wasted spending, leaving regional volunteers waiting for essential infrastructure upgrades.

The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien says the Allan Labor government’s inability to manage infrastructure projects is causing major delays and cost blowouts for CFA station builds across regional Victoria.

CFA costs blowout

Mr O’Brien said a recent Weekly Times report exposed spiralling consultant and project management costs, with some regional CFA station projects now costing more than $3 million and taking years longer than promised to deliver.

Mr O’Brien said the Winnindoo CFA station project was a prime example. "Winnindoo is a one-truck brigade, yet the cost of its long-promised new station is expected to exceed $3 million. This project was first funded in the 2020 State Budget and six years later construction is only just getting underway. The current station is effectively an old shed with a portaloo out the back, yet local volunteers have been left waiting while costs continue to spiral."

Mr O’Brien said the Allan Labor government had completely lost control of project delivery. "When you have relatively small projects blowing out into multi-million-dollar builds and taking years to complete, it’s clear the government cannot manage money or infrastructure properly," he said.

CFA funding concerns raised

Mr O’Brien said, "I’m very pleased to see Mirboo North CFA finally receive funding for the new station it deserves, but the $7 million commitment in the 2026-27 budget again raises serious questions about escalating costs and value for money in these projects. Mirboo North CFA was originally told in 2022 it would receive capital funding for a new station, only for that funding to later be withdrawn, causing further uncertainty and delay for local volunteers."

Mr O’Brien said waste and blowouts on existing projects were limiting the government’s ability to invest in other much-needed CFA infrastructure across Gippsland. "Foster and Korumburra CFAs also desperately need new stations and local volunteers deserve certainty about when these projects will finally be funded. "When taxpayers’ money is being wasted on consultant costs, delays and budget blowouts elsewhere, that is money that could be going towards projects like these."

Mr O’Brien said it was local CFA volunteers and regional communities paying the price for Labor’s failures. "These volunteers put their lives on the line to protect our communities and they deserve better than endless delays, bureaucracy and budget blowouts. Only The Nationals in government will ensure Gippslanders get the fresh start needed to get Victoria back on track."
