Community feedback wanted on Bass Coast Shire Council Fair Access Policy and Action Plan by 21 April 2024

Bass Coast introduces Fair Access Policy promoting equal access to sports facilities, emphasising gender equality, inclusivity, and leadership representation. Community feedback sought through information sessions.

A new "Fair Access Policy" for community sporting facilities is set to level the playing field for all, eliminating the barriers that may prevent girls, women and gender diverse people taking up sport and staying physically active. Council is proud to introduce a Draft Fair Access Policy and Draft Action Plan that promotes equal access and use of community sports facilities, for all people, in Bass Coast.

Inclusive sports policy

The new policy sets out what council and clubs can do to ensure they create an environment that is safe and inclusive, from their volunteers to their playing group and leaders. As strong advocates for gender equality, council believes everyone should have access to the same level of training, game times, facilities, coaching and leadership opportunities.

Mayor Cr Clare Le Serve said while clubs had come a long way, it was not uncommon for men's teams to be given the best game times and access to better and newer facilities. "Together, we can break down barriers, create equal opportunities, and build a stronger sense of unity within our sporting community,"

"For council, equality is not a negotiable notion, and removing the barriers that prevent girls and women from taking up different sports means that they will form better connections with the community and grassroots clubs and sports will continue to grow," she said.

Inclusive sports policy

Mayor Le Serve also said, "This policy is for all people, not just women, as everyone has a right to feel welcome and included, taking part in sporting activities free from discrimination or prejudice. The benefits of physical exercise and being part of a team is something everyone should get to experience."

The Fair Access Policy also calls for women to be equally represented at a leadership and governance level within community sports clubs. Bass Coast Shire Council is a leader in gender equality, becoming the first council in Victoria to demand the same prize money for men and women for all sporting competitions held at council owned or managed facilities in the region.

Community feedback sessions

Council wants to hear from people to ensure the Fair Access Policy and Action Plan meets the needs and expectations of our community. Family-Friendly Information sessions will be held both in person and online.
