As part of Orbost Secondary school's 'get to know your local industry' program, ten Year 8 students had a tour of East Gippsland Water's Orbost facilities recently. The students were introduced to the Water Storage facilities and Water Treatment Plant as part of their talk and tour with Orbost District Manager, Russell Healey. Russell explained how the organisation provides essential tap water and manages waste water from Buchan through to Orbost and Bemm River for domestic customers.

Students commendable curiosity

The students were very interested in the water testing and sampling part of the tour. Russell showed them the control room, where water flow is monitored and water quality sampling and testing is completed on a weekly basis. There is also a control panel, which can also be operated remotely, to check and monitor the performance of the Water Treatment Plant 24/7.

East Gippsland Water's Executive Manager Customers, Community and Communications David Radford said that it is great to see young people interested in local businesses and organisations. "We are always keen for local schools and students to learn about the operational side of the water industry and how we provide them with their drinking water and treat their wastewater."

"Hopefully, the students went away more informed and you never know, as a local employer, some of them may be our employees of the future."
If any other schools are interested in touring East Gippsland Water's facilities or would like someone to provide a talk on all things water, email education@egwater.vic.gov.au with your request.
