East Gippsland Council urges drivers to slow down, park legally and keep school zones safe
East Gippsland Shire Council urges drivers to slow down, obey school zone rules, park legally and follow crossing supervisors to keep students safe as school resumes. Unsafe behaviour can be reported to the council.
With students heading back to school next week, East Gippsland Shire Council is calling on all drivers to take responsibility for keeping our roads safe - especially near schools. Mayor John White said parking and road rules around school zones are in place to protect children, pedestrians and other road users, and that drivers must take them seriously.

School zones matter
John said, "As schools return, roads around them become much busier. Drivers need to reduce speed, be patient during peak times, and park only in designated areas within the allowed time limits. The 40 km/h speed limits in school zones and the parking restrictions aren't optional - they're there to keep our children safe. Every driver has a duty to follow them."
School zone speed limits apply from 8.00 am to 9.30 am and 2.30 pm to 4.00 pm on school days. Drivers are reminded to stop, wait and follow the directions of school crossing supervisors. There will be regular patrols around schools this term, and drivers who park illegally can expect to be fined.
Anyone who witnesses unsafe parking, driving, or behaviour near schools or crossings is encouraged to report it to Council on (03) 5153 9500. "The safety of our children is everyone's responsibility. Please slow down, park legally, pay attention - and help keep our students safe," John said.
