Danny O'Brien pushes locals' concerns to state government after visiting more than 15 South Gippsland communities
Danny O'Brien met residents in over 15 Gippsland South communities, raising road, tax, planning, and offshore wind concerns with the state government, promising continued advocacy and local visits.
The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O'Brien, is taking up multiple issues with the state government on behalf of local residents after a series of face-to-face meetings with residents in more than 15 local communities.
Danny O'Brien said travelling Gippsland South brings the bonus of enjoying great local food, coffee, and country hospitality everywhere
Connecting with locals
Throughout June, Mr O'Brien took his mobile office to Toongabbie, Cowwarr, Loch, Poowong, Nyora, Loch Sport, Golden Beach, Seaspray, Stradbroke, Yarram, Woodside, Port Albert, Alberton, Meeniyan, Dumbalk and Koonwarra.
"These visits are all about taking the time to sit down with locals in their own communities to listen to their concerns and offer support where I can. It was great to be able to meet with a wide range of locals to discuss everything from local roads and healthcare access to planning matters, public transport, and the future of small towns," Mr O'Brien said.
Locals' concerns
A number of key issues were raised repeatedly - chief among them, the new Emergency Services Volunteer Fund (ESVF) tax, which many locals rightfully fear will unfairly impact their household budget. Mr O'Brien said poor road maintenance was also a common complaint.
"The condition of our roads came up in almost every town. Potholes, crumbling surfaces and general neglect are frustrating and, more importantly, dangerous. I will be following up with VicRoads on the specific roads that were raised with me, but more generally I will also be continuing to push for more investment to ensure our roads are built better from the start," he said.
In coastal communities such as Loch Sport and Golden Beach, residents voiced concerns about the impact of proposed offshore wind developments as well as proposed changes to flood overlay planning legislation. "I am continuing to work with the people in these communities to ensure that their concerns are voiced in Parliament."
Parliament's winter break won't stop Danny O'Brien working locally, with visits planned for Boolarra, Yinnar, Rosedale, Gormandale and Kilmany
Food, community, connection
Mr O'Brien also acknowledged one of the great perks of hitting the road through Gippsland South - sampling the fantastic local food and hospitality. "Whether it's enjoying fish and chips in Port Albert, grabbing a coffee from The Meeniyan Store, or treating myself to something sweet from Kelly's Bakery in Korumburra - there's no shortage of great local spots to support and enjoy.
"Although Parliament is now pausing for the winter break, I will continue to be hard at work across the electorate. In July, I'll be visiting Boolarra, Yinnar, Yinnar South, Rosedale, Gormandale and Kilmany and I encourage anyone who'd like to meet with me to get in touch," he said.
Residents in these areas can contact Mr O'Brien's office on 5144 1987 or email Danny O'Brien to make an appointment or seek assistance with any specific state government matters.
