By news@gippsland - 1st September 2025 - Back to News Grand final day in Swifts Creek will be even bigger this year, with the town set to officially open its upgraded recreation reserve on Omeo District Football Netball League's biggest day of the season - and everyone is invited to join the Saturday 6 September celebration. 
Swifts Creek will celebrate the official opening of its $2.9 million upgraded recreation reserve during the Omeo District Football Netball League Grand Final on Saturday, 6 September Modern sporting hubThe $2.9 million project has delivered a modern multipurpose pavilion and competition-ready netball and tennis courts, transforming the reserve into a modern hub for sport and community events. These upgrades are part of council's commitment to creating vibrant, active and healthy communities, with facilities that support people of all ages and abilities. "Sport - footy, netball and tennis in particular - are at the heart of our rural communities. So, these new facilities are more than just changerooms or courts - the reserve is a place where people of all ages can connect, work up a sweat and have a laugh," Mayor Cr John White said. Adaptable local facilitiesThe new facilities will be used by the region's clubs during the Omeo and District Football Netball League season. Local schools will also utilise the facilities and the Swifts Creek Committee of Management will host social gatherings and events. The facilities are also available for hire. "Swifts Creek now has a community venue that is built to last, adaptable for future needs, and ready to serve as both a sporting centre and a place to gather if a natural disaster strikes," John said. Member for Eastern Victoria Tom McIntosh said the project was a significant, long-term investment, that would bring social, economic and lifestyle benefits for Swifts Creek residents well into the future. "These upgrades are an important investment in rural East Gippsland and will serve the community well for decades to come." Funding community upgradesThe upgrade was funded by the Victorian government through Emergency Recovery Victoria and Regional Development Victoria, with funding also provided by Swifts Creek Recreation Reserve Committee of Management and council. The Australian government and Victorian government co-shared funding for the Local Community Grants Program. The official opening will take place at 1.00 pm on Saturday 6 September at 75 Cassilis Road, Swifts Creek, as part of the ODFNL Grand Final celebrations.
