Feedback wanted on Energy Australia's licence application to divert water from Morwell River for pump testing by 3 September 2025
Energy Australia Yallourn has applied to Southern Rural Water to annually divert 1,500ML from the Morwell River for infrastructure testing. A full public consultation will ensure transparency and community input.
Southern Rural Water has received an application from Energy Australia Yallourn for an annual take of 1,500 megalitres (ML) from the Morwell River. The application is for a returned water licence for the purposes of conducting operational tests of pumping infrastructure. Each test is expected to require between 700 ML to 750 ML of water.
Southern Rural Water is committed to transparency and community input, with consultation open until 3 September 2025. Affected parties may seek VCAT review within 28 days
Water returned entirely
All water will be pumped through diversion pipelines, with no consumptive use of water. So, 100% of the water will be returned to the river system. Southern Rural Water aims to ensure the community has access to accurate and transparent information about the applications and is given a fair opportunity to provide feedback before any decisions are made.
A consultation process will now take place to ensure the proper consideration of relevant matters, as per the Water Act 1989. Comment will be sought from any interested person or party who considers they may be affected by the application. For more details about the process, or to have your say, visit Southern Rural Water project page.
