Sale residents urged to safely dispose of hazardous household chemicals at free Detox Your Home event on 10 October 2026Wellington Shire residents can safely dispose of unwanted hazardous household chemicals at a free Detox Your Home event in Sale, helping protect waterways, people, animals and the environment. By news@gippsland - 16th September 2026 - Back to News Wellington Shire residents are encouraged to clear out unwanted hazardous household chemicals and dispose of them safely at the upcoming Detox Your Home event at the Gippsland Regional Livestock Exchange (GRLE) in Sale. Delivered by the Victorian Government's Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) in partnership with Wellington Shire Council, this free and convenient service helps keep hazardous household chemicals out of landfill and waterways. 
Common household chemicals can be hazardous when incorrectly disposed of, contaminating waterways, creating fire risks and harming people, animals and the environment Safe chemical disposalMany common products found in sheds, garages, laundries and under kitchen sinks can be harmful if disposed of incorrectly. Household chemicals should never be poured down drains or placed in household bins, as they can contaminate waterways, create fire risks in collection trucks waste facilities, and harm people, animals and the environment. Wellington Shire Mayor Cindy Madeley encouraged residents to take advantage of the free service. "Detox Your Home makes it easy for residents to safely dispose of unwanted household chemicals while helping protect our environment. I urge residents to register for this free event and let the experts dispose of them safely. Every chemical collected is one less potential hazard for our homes and community," Cr Madeley said. The event will be staffed by qualified chemists who will identify and sort chemicals before they are transported to a licensed facility for reuse or safe disposal. With community safety in mind, the collection will operate as a drive through and contactless event with no walk-ins accepted. Household chemical collectionCommon chemicals collected at Detox your Home events include: - Fuels and flammable liquids - turpentine, methylated spirits, petrol, kerosene, diesel, paint thinners
- Garden - herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, pool chemicals, poisons
- Household - cleaners, bleach, ammonia, oven cleaner, solvents, cooking oil, cosmetics, fire extinguishers
- Car - wax, transmission fluid, body filler, brake fluid
Paint is not accepted as part of the collection. A full list of items accepted and not accepted can be found at Victoria State Government website. Detox your home will take place at the Gippsland Regional Livestock Exchange, located on Saleyards Road in Sale, between 9am and midday on Saturday 10 October 2026.
