Latrobe City Mayor, Cr Brendan Jenkins, said the position being offered was a wonderful opportunity for someone from Latrobe to work in Takasago for twelve-months assisting the young citizens of our Sister City to learn English. "Takasago City has again generously made the opportunity possible and will pay all costs including wages, accommodation and travel, which is about $50,000 Australian," Cr Jenkins said. The program first commenced in 2001 and Janine Edbooke from Churchill was the first Latrobe person selected to take up the role of Assistant English Teacher (AET) in Takasago. "Janine finishes in June and will return to Latrobe after a rewarding twelve-months. We know from the reports she has sent back that, whilst there were obvious challenges, she has found the experience most worthwhile both in terms of her own career and her personal growth," Cr Jenkins said. "The AET program is another example of the benefits that can come through the development of a successful international relations program. We are most grateful to have such a wonderful relationship with Takasago that they specifically want people from Latrobe to help with the education of their young people. "The only specific prerequisite is that you must have a tertiary degree of some description. This does not have to be in teaching," Cr Jenkins stressed. Applications are now open and will be received up until 27 March 2002. Citizens wanting further information are encouraged to contact Council’s Administration Manager, telephone 5173 1408.
