Update On Bogong (South) Complex Fire

A new fire was started by lightning strike at One Tree Hill, 6kms north of Valencia Creek today

By DSE/CFA - 7th February 2003 - Back to News

A new fire was started by lightning strike at One Tree Hill, 6kms north of Valencia Creek today. The fire reached just over one hectare in size and two dozers with 16 crew were despatched to deal with it. The fire is now contained.

The firefront in the east of the region has moved onto the Bonang River near Dellicknora and is being water bombed by aircraft.

Further backburning will be undertaken in the Deddick River area overnight.

The main fire is still 20kms north of Dargo, but the Matheson’s Flat fire has spread north towards the main fire front and is now 600 hectares in size.

The firefront north west of Crooked River remains in the same general area with smoke cover limiting the capacity to get an accurate location of the fire from the air.

The American Fire Management Crew has arrived in Dargo and are now being integrated into the Incident Management Team, along with a New Zealand Fire Management Expert.

More backburns are planned while the weather conditions are favourable, securing containment lines to the south of the main fire.
