International agents from 13 countries will be visiting Monash University, Gippsland Campus on Tuesday, October 29 to gain a better understanding of the unique attributes of the university and region. The 19 agents will be doing a campus tour, listening to a number of presentations and eating Gippsland fare as part of the program. The information they gain will be used to help them market Gippsland internationally.

A group of academics from across Australia will be taking part in a conference at Monash Gippsland on Thursday, October 31 to discuss how recent world events shape and change learning. The conference entitled "New Pedagogies in Globalising Times" will explore how world events such as the Bali Bombing and September 11 impact people at a local level.

The closing date for enhancement studies is November 1. The Monash University Enhancement Studies Program provides the opportunity for secondary students to extend their learning in a particular subject area by completing the first year of a standard university subject as part of their Year 12 program. The program is endorsed by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority. If a student successfully completes the program and meets the VCE eligibility guidelines, the university study can be counted as the student’s sixth VCE study and will be included in the calculation of the student’s ENTER.

Making the Grade

As recently reported in the Latrobe Valley Express, Monash Gippsland Science Lecturer Phil Higgins voluntarily takes his trade to remote areas of Australia to teach primary school children. For information about sponsorship call the Latrobe Valley Aero Club on 5174 2591.

Interest in the Gippsland Internship program continues to skyrocket. The Gippsland Internship program links students with a local employer in their field of study who provides the student with $1000 per year in book money, fully paid part-time employment, and a minimum of twelve months full-time employment after the successful completion of the degree. Since the program commenced in March 2001, interest has steadily grown from both employers and students. Employers see the program as a great way to get top-quality staff and retain high achievers in the region. Students get to enhance their skills and gain invaluable work experience.

Open subject

Tim Cope, who has just completed work for Gippsland’s Sport and Outdoor Recreation program, is planning a two-year circumvention of the Arctic along with fellow Gippslander Tim Billington. The 23-year-old Drouin native was recently voted Australian Adventurer of the Year upon completing a cycling and river trek across Russia.
