Application for State Government funding for the centre a success

By Carol McCormack - 8th October 2002 - Back to News

The Hon John Brumby, Minister for Innovation, Industry and Regional Development, today announced that Council’s submission for $250,000 funding from the Living Regions, Living Suburbs program had been granted.

"We are absolutely delighted to hear our submission was successful because this facility is very important to the communities of San Remo, Newhaven and Cape Woolamai," said Cr John Gains, Mayor of Bass Coast Shire Council.

"We have been working with the community since early 2000 to develop plans for the facility and secure funding for its construction," said Cr Gains.

Bass Coast Shire Council has committed $375,000 from its 2002-2003 budget for the Pre-School and Community Centre. The community will also be contributing funding and in-kind support to the project.

"We have undertaken extensive community consultation on this project ever since it was decided the existing San Remo Pre-school needed to be relocated," said Cr Gains. "A Pre-school working party has worked with Council to help develop plans for a facility that will serve the whole community."

The facility will include the pre-school, community room and meeting rooms. It is expected the meeting rooms will be used by visiting professional services as well as local community groups.

The new facility will be located on Back Beach Road. A planning application was granted in August 2002. Construction is expected to begin in early 2003. It is expected the Pre-school and Community Centre will be ready for action in June 2003.
