GVTU Attends World Disability Conference

Staff and students from the Gippsland Vocational Training Unit attend Inclusion International

Staff and students from the Gippsland Vocational Training Unit (GVTU) in Morwell recently attended the 13th World Congress of Inclusion International where they hosted presentations on vocational training.

The conference was held at the World Conference Centre in Melbourne, where delegates from over 65 countries came together to share experiences, compare strategies and find mutual support in their efforts to ensure people with disabilities achieve the right to enjoy "Life, Liberty and Security", which was also the theme of the conference.

There were over 200 presentations on the day, focusing on the realities of prejudice, discrimination, isolation, exclusion and dealing with the challenges faced by people with disabilities across the world.

Leanne Bruce from the GVTU made a presentation titled "Effective Vocational Training and Work Preparation Leads to Equal Access to Real Jobs, Fair Wages and Conditions, Financial Security and Independence," which explained the role of the Gippsland Vocational Training Unit throughout the Gippsland region.

GVTU students Janelle Curran, Kathryn Bartlett, Michelle Booth and Robert Smith made a presentation titled "Pathways to the Future", where they discussed how the making of a video provided them with the opportunity to problem solve and work together as a group.

The students gave a brief overview of how the video was produced and their experiences with writing the script and preparation involved in making the video.

They said that producing the video provided them with many problem solving situations and how working together as a group helped them to achieve the outcome.

The Gippsland Vocational Training Unit is a community based agency in Gippsland. The service developed by the agency is unique, in that it is specifically designed to facilitate opportunities for young people aged 15-26 in rural communities to access vocational education, employment and personal development training in their community.
