Justice Precinct BoostPolice and Court complex a boost for whole of Valley By Latrobe City Council - 16th July 2002 - Back to News Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins has welcomed today’s announcement by the State Government confirming the $25 million legal precinct will go ahead in Morwell.
The new complex to be completed in 2004 will be built on the existing court site in Morwell, with adjacent land being purchased from Latrobe City Council. The site will comprise a consolidated parcel of land bordered by Commercial Road, Hazelwood Road and Ann Street, with the exception of the Latrobe Regional Gallery.
Cr Jenkins said the announcement was positive for the whole Latrobe Valley with local contractors and suppliers from across the region likely to benefit from the construction and fitting out.
"This $25 million project to consolidate and expand policing and court infrastructure with a state of the art facility is welcome. There was a commitment by the State Government to revitalise the Latrobe Valley, and once again we are seeing projects announced by the Ministerial Taskforce last year, being delivered," Cr Jenkins said.
As part of the development, land adjacent to the existing court site has been purchased from Latrobe City, including Latrobe House, the Morwell Library and the Morwell Central Preschool.
"We have already announced that the Morwell Central Preschool will be relocated. Similarly, we have already announced that the Morwell Library will be housed in temporary premises until stage-two of the corporate headquarters project is undertaken. There will also be a need for us to continue to deliver Citizen services and accommodate staff in Latrobe House until the new corporate headquarters is completed early in 2004. Plans are already underway to accommodate these requirements," Cr Jenkins said.
"The go-ahead for the legal precinct is another boost for the Morwell central business district, following refurbishment of the Latrobe Regional Gallery and the development of the new corporate offices. Over the next two years, the town will experience massive development changes that will not only benefit the people of Morwell, but the whole Latrobe Valley through the creation of jobs and opportunities," Cr Jenkins concluded.
