Bass Coast Local News: Reconstruction Completed Well Ahead Of ScheduleBass Coast Shire Council has completed the reconstruction of Cowes-Rhyll Road from Thompson Avenue to Jeury Lane, Cowes By Bass Coast Shire Council - 13th May 2002 - Back to News Tell us your opinion See what others have said Bass Coast Shire Council has completed the reconstruction of Cowes-Rhyll Road from Thompson Avenue to Jeury Lane, Cowes.
Work commenced on the reconstruction of this one kilometre section of rural road on 29 January 2002. South Gippsland Quarries Pty Ltd of Nerrena was the contractor and the company has now completed the job well ahead of schedule.
The project formed part of the Council’s 2001/2002 capital works program. The Federal Government fully funded the work through its Roads to Recovery program. The project cost of $211,000 was minimised by utilisation of the old road as the foundation for the new pavement. This was an excellent outcome, given that the original pavement was of very light construction. Cowes-Rhyll Road was built as a single lane road in the days when only minimal traffic flowed between the two seaside resorts.
Bass Coast Shire Council Mayor, Coucillor John Gains said: "This has been an important project for the Shire and the Phillip Island community in general. Cowes-Rhyll Road is a significant link on the Island for residents, tourists and holiday makers. The road has been vastly improved and is now much safer for motorists, motor cyclists and bicycle riders".
