‘Energy in Sport Celebration’ launchedThe autumn sports carnival By Latrobe City Council - 1st April 2002 - Back to News Latrobe City Council has launched an autumn sports carnival the ‘Energy in Sport Celebration’, which features a series of sporting events being held in April and May 2002.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins, said the autumn sports carnival followed the success of Latrobe’s Spring Racing Carnival – ‘The Power of Racing’. "Latrobe recognises that large sporting events involving competitors from outside the region are an excellent means of attracting visitor to country areas, and this autumn celebration is aimed at creating a festive atmosphere with lots of activities which will attract people to the municipality," Cr Jenkins said.
The Energy in Sport Celebration will take place from 19 April until 19 May, and offers an exciting mix of sporting events including the Greyhound Gippsland Series Carnival, the Midvalley Morwell Cup, Round 1 of the ADB Thumpernats, the Ford Racing Road King Karting Series Round 2, and the Latrobe City Cup.
The Greyhound Gippsland Series Carnival takes place on Friday 19 April 2002 at Glenview Park Traralgon and the event incorporates the Warragul, Cranbourne, Sale and Traralgon Greyhound Clubs.
For horse racing fans, the Midvalley Morwell Cup will be held at the Traralgon Race Course, Glenview Park Traralgon on Saturday 20 April; and the Latrobe City Cup, which is also the final event of the Energy in Sport Celebration, will be held at the Moe Race Course, Waterloo Road Moe, on Sunday 19 May.
Events Latrobe Coordinator, Janiene Ayre, said Latrobe City was also proud to be hosting dirt bike and karting championships as part of the celebration.
"Round 1 of the ADB Thumper Nats (Australian Dirt Bike Championships - Australian 4 Stroke Motocross Championships) is being held on Sunday 5 May at Loy Lang Park Traralgon, and there’s an exciting new event for Latrobe City in the Ford Racing Road King Karting Series Round 2, which is being held in the grounds of Kernot Hall Morwell, on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 May. Together with the greyhounds and horse racing, this is going to be an action and fun-packed program of events," Ms Ayre said.
Cr Jenkins said that Council and the racing clubs were working closely again with local tourism operators to ensure that the region gained maximum benefit from the event and its promotion. "Visitors are being encouraged to explore the region with weekend and specific tourism packages available," Cr Jenkins said.
"Latrobe City recognises that a unified, coordinated marketing approach, supported by tourism operators can result in successful individual events and ultimately significant economic benefits for the region. A range of incentives has been provided to encourage people not only to come to Latrobe City, but also to stay over and see more of what Latrobe and its surrounds have to offer," Cr Jenkins said.
"We must recognise the benefits achieved by Latrobe City by attracting major events to Latrobe and the impact on the region by encouraging tourism. The Energy in Sport Celebration has the potential to attract huge numbers of visitors to the region, and we must work together to maximise its effect," Cr Jenkins added.
