Heritage Study For Bass Coast

Members of the community are invited to register sites of cultural significance

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 1st April 2002 - Back to News

Members of the community are invited to register sites of cultural significance in Bass Coast Shire as part of a heritage study of the local area.

Cr John Gains, Mayor of Bass Coast Shire Council, said the purpose of the study is to identify, assess and document places of cultural significance within the municipality and to make recommendations for their future conservation.

"There will be two stages to the heritage study," said Cr Gains. "The first is to identify all places of potential cultural significance, and this is particularly where we need assistance from members of the community."

People are encouraged to attend either of two meetings on Monday 8 April to contribute their ideas about areas of cultural heritage significance in the Shire. Meetings will be held at the Cowes Cultural Centre from 3pm – 5pm and Bass Coast Civic Centre in Wonthaggi from 7pm-9pm.

"I urge local people to come along to the meetings and help us identify local areas of significance," said Cr Gains.

Cr Gains explained that the second stage of the study would be to assess the significance of the nominated places with a view to introducing heritage overlay controls under the local planning scheme.

As part of the second stage, owners of properties that are considered for inclusion in the heritage overlay will be notified individually and provided a full explanation of proposed controls.

"The study is an opportunity to protect significant heritage assets for the benefit of future generations and preserve the historic character of townships," said Cr Gains.

"Please come along to the meetings on 8 April to have your input," he said.
