Dodgers win Battle for SecondThe action continued in perfect conditions for baseball on Sunday in the Edison Mission Energy Latrobe Valley Baseball Association By Latrobe Valley Baseball Association - 14th August 2001 - Back to News The action continued in perfect conditions for baseball on Sunday in the Edison Mission Energy Latrobe Valley Baseball Association. In round seventeen games Morwell upset the fancied Churchill Braves, Moe/Newborough moved to second after defeating Sale and Traralgon and Yarram did battle.
Churchill travelled to Morwell and was greeted by a determined outfit. Despite some great pitching by Churchill’s Tim Cranwell and Bruce Gillespie, Morwell were able to get bat to ball consistently. Morwell’s pitching led by Garyth Mullet kept the Churchill bats in check. Mullet finished with six strikeouts and was aptly supported by his field. The Cougars lead from start to finish for their first victory. Best for Morwell was Rory Clark, Jason Barnes, Nigel Aubrey and Mullet. Ross Cooen, Jim Armstrong and Cranwell were the Braves top performers.
In what was a reversal of the A grade game, untimely errors cost Morwell dearly with nine unearned runs against them in the B grade game. These errors along with nine safe hits to Morwell’s three accounted for the result with the final score being 15-5 in Churchill’s favour.
The battle for second position unfolded in Sale as they took on Moe/Newborough. A slow start to the game with Sale leading 1-0 at the top of the third on a Dodger error. After threatening to take control of the game early the Dodgers finally capitalised at the bottom of the third. A huge three run home run over right by Kirk Went led the charge as the Dodgers amassed eight runs. Sale added two more runs to close the margin to 8-3. The Dodgers once again threatened but continued to leave runners in scoring position. In the fifth Sale closed the margin to 8-4, but that would be as close as they got as the Dodgers exploded for five runs. Good middle order hitting effectively closed out the game for an impressive 13-4 victory keeping a top position finish possible.
The B grade game was a tight low scoring contest that the Dodgers won 5-3. The victory over ladder leader Sale leaves the door open for a possible top position finish. The Dodgers grabbed the lead early and held on in tense contest that was more about stopping runs than scoring them.
Traralgon hosted the Stealers in a game that started slowly. In the Redsox second dig they added six runs from twelve bats and had control of the contest. The sixth dig almost brought the downfall for Traralgon as fielding errors and good batting allowed Yarram to score seven runs and close the gap to 9-11. The game was in the balance with the Stealers tracking down fly balls and making the big plays. Traralgon showed composure late to withstand the Yarram pressure winning 14-10. Wayne Beames had three hits for the Redsox and Troy McKay and Ashley Taylor had two hits respectively for the Stealers.
Traralgon won the C grade game due to solid batting and fielding. In a game that was light on for safe hits the highlight of the game was a run-down play to make the last out and give the Redsox victory. The under 14 game was a confidence boosting win for the Redsox as the finals loom.
The action continues this Sunday with round eighteen games in the Edison Mission Energy Latrobe Valley Baseball Association. Traralgon host Morwell, Yarram travels to Sale and the Churchill Braves battle Moe/Newborough. The public is welcome.
