Diabetes: Don’T Be Blind To The Risks

Nationals Member for Morwell Russell Northe has encouraged community members to test their health this week for National Diabetes Week, beginning Monday 10 July 2011.

The campaign, a joint venture between Diabetes Australia and Vision 2020 Australia, will run until Friday 16 July. Mr Northe said this year’s National Diabetes Week’s campaign is twofold. "Firstly, the purpose of the campaign is to encourage the 2 million Australians at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes to assess your risk. Secondly, it is to encourage the 1 million Australians with known diabetes to have regular eye checks. "Unfortunately vision impairment and diabetes are interrelated, and while it is vitally important to ensure that your immediate health is under control, it is also imperative that all those other functions that we rely so heavily on are adequately checked. "The State Government of Victoria recently provided further funding for the Life! Program for a second four year period, which Diabetes Australia (Victoria) are leading. This important state-wide diabetes prevention program encourages the Australian public to assess their risk of diabetes and be active in preventing type 2 diabetes" Mr Northe said completing an AUSDRISK diabetes risk assessment test can show whether an individual is at a high risk of developing type 2 diabetes. "Completing the test can show where in your life you could make a few tweaks and adjustments. Any positive changes could have a huge effect on lowering your risk of developing diabetes later in life. "So this week, put your health at the forefront of your mind. Do your risk assessment and have your eyes checked."
