‘Heavens’ Opens At The GalleryRenowned Australian artist Asher Bilu will create an extraordinary site-specific installation ‘Heavens’ for the Latrobe Regional Gallery to be unveiled on Saturday 22 April at 11am. By Latrobe City Shire - 18th April 2007 - Back to News Gallery director, Jacqui Hemsley said that ‘Heavens’ was inspired by the artist’s passion for astronomy.
"Bilu has produced a series of white net-like veils from congealed resinous paint, literally three dimensional paintings, which he will subtly layer across blackened gallery walls, creating an other worldly experience for visitors. Extending the boundary of physical space, the installation will inspire a sense of awe and mystery and create a feeling of timelessness," Ms Hemsley explained.
"Bilu himself has declared his own fascination with science as a source of inspiration, claiming that big questions really ignite the imagination," Ms Hemsley added.
"Bilu, now in his seventieth year, has created his own version of the heavens that is intended to create a profound contemplative feeling that is meaningful to people of all faiths, cultures and spiritual philosophies," Ms Hemsley said.
"Bilu is a highly prolific artist whose work has been widely exhibited since arriving in Australia from Israel in 1956. He has established a reputation for creating paintings, sculpture and installations that are challenging and extremely moving. His technique changes as he investigates the use of new media, but his work always reflects his ongoing fascination with light, and his love of music and science, especially cosmology. Bilu’s work is also represented in major institutions throughout Australia and overseas," Ms Hemsley explained.
"The exhibition space here at the Latrobe Regional Gallery will be completely transformed by Asher Bilu’s installation. Visitors will be fully immersed, excited and inspired – ‘Heavens’ is an event not to be missed," Ms Hemsley concluded.
Heavens will be running until the Sunday 3 June.
The Latrobe Regional Gallery is open 7 days, Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm, Saturday and Sunday 11am to 4pm. Admission is free.
