Tourism operators urged to attend project briefingBy City of Latrobe - 15th April 2005 - Back to News An introductory briefing session for local tourism industry operators, on building a more sustainable tourism industry in Gippsland will be held from 10am – 12 noon this Thursday 21 April, at the Quality Inn Latrobe Convention Centre, Princes Highway Traralgon,
Latrobe City’s acting tourism manager, Linda Brock, said the ‘Building Sustainable Tourism in Gippsland’ project is the start of a whole of Gippsland approach to developing tourism further.
"Over the next 18 months the project will aim to deliver a suite of outcomes, including better research and understanding of tourism in Gippsland, robust business networks, identified opportunities, stronger branding, marketing, links and co-operation and an infrastructure plan.
"In researching and understanding tourism we need to define the reasons why people come to our region, what they expect of our facilities and attractions and what perceptions they gain during their visit," Ms Brock said.
"We can then take a close look at the current businesses and experiences on offer throughout our region and the whole of Gippsland to identify any gaps that can be filled to enhance the region’s appeal to potential tourists. For example, we may find visitors have expectations of outdoor experiences that are not currently being met and provide tourism operators with new business opportunities.
"It’s also important to create and strengthen networks between tourism operators and build marketing concepts such as the development of a world class touring route through the region," Ms Brock said.
"I urge all local tourism operators to attend the workshop to become involved in one of the most significant strategic tourism initiatives ever undertaken in Gippsland.
"At the forum, Gippsland businesses will be able to find out how they can leverage off the project and enhance their business success and sustainability by accessing research data for informed business planning; connecting into new business networks; enhancing business skills; identifying and building new business opportunities; and participating in co-operative marketing opportunities associated with the development of a world class-touring route concept for Gippsland," Ms Brock said.
The ‘Building Sustainable Tourism in Gippsland’, project under the Sustainable Regions Program, is a partnership of the six Gippsland municipal Councils of South Gippsland, Bass Coast, Wellington, Baw Baw, Latrobe City and East Gippsland; along with Destination Gippsland Incorporated and Tourism Victoria.
