National Education Week A Chance To Get Involved

National Numeracy and Literacy Week, as well as being an opportunity to celebrate the good work of schools, is also a chance to consider the role of family in education, according to Gippsland MP, Peter Hall.

By Peter Hall - 25th August 2004 - Back to News

Mr Hall, The Nationals’ spokesman on Education and Training, encouraged parents and their children to take part in local activities through the week, which is from 30 August until 5 September.

"Clearly schools, teachers and the education system have a major role to play in the education of children, but the family can also benefit enormously by being involved," Mr Hall said.

"Education is, ideally, about a partnership between school and family and National Numeracy and Literacy Week is a good opportunity to get involved. That does not mean parents have to be in the classroom all the time but parents and family can always be involved at some level."

National Literacy and Numeracy Week is an Australian government initiative conducted in conjunction with the States and Territories to celebrate the work being done in schools and communities to improve literacy and numeracy skills.

The purpose of the Week is to also showcase the hard work school communities are undertaking to improve literacy and numeracy skills and recognise the outstanding results that have been achieved.

Mr Hall said it also helped raise community awareness of the importance of all Australian students developing effective literacy and numeracy skills.

"I would also encourage local parents to contact their school and find out what activities are taking place as part of the week," Mr Hall said.
