Pocket Park Opens The Way For Next Church Street Stage

A ‘pocket park’ located next to the post office in Morwell’s Church Street has opened for the community to enjoy. The park features seating and garden beds and is likely to prove popular with shoppers and traders as a place to relax.

Latrobe City mayor, Cr Bruce Lougheed said that the new park has been developed on an underutilised public space as part of a Transit Cities’ project aimed at improving streetscapes in town centres.

"Even though the new park has only been opened for a few days it is already attracting lots of mums, children and the elderly; and positive feedback has been received throughout the construction process."

Cr Lougheed said that the completion of the park is only the first stage of a facelift for Morwell’s Church Street. "At the last council meeting, the tender for stage-two of the Church Street refurbishment was awarded and works are likely to commence in October.

"Stage-two will include removing the current brick paving and seating booths along Church Street, which will be replaced with a new footpath, new seating, illumination and some in-ground creative LED lighting. Additional street trees will be planted and a street print installed which was designed with the help of the Church Street traders," Cr Lougheed said.

"The completion of works will no doubt deliver a vibrant, inviting and attractive streetscape for the community. However, there are bound to be some inconveniences by way of limited parking or detours encountered while the work is underway; and we ask shoppers and traders to be patient while the works are affected," Cr Lougheed added.
