Speed humps installed to curb traffic speed in MoeTwo speed humps have recently been installed in Service Road South, Moe in an attempt to get speeding motorists to slow down. By Latrobe City Council - 29th April 2005 - Back to News Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed said that the measures had been taken in response to residents’ concerns over the excessive speeds recorded in the road during traffic counts.
"Residents had become concerned about the speed at which some vehicles were travelling down the road. Council organised a public meeting where several traffic calming options were tabled and at a subsequent Council meeting it was agreed to install the speed humps," Cr Lougheed explained.
"Although the speed limit in the road is 50kph, many vehicles were recorded travelling at speeds in excess of 60kph, whilst others were recorded at over 100kph. The highest speed recorded was 156kph.
"We hope that the installation of these two flat top humps has helped to allay residents’ worries over the safety of pedestrians and other road users who travel at the correct speed," Cr Lougheed said.
Cr Lougheed added that all residents, the Neighbourhood House located in the road, and LV Buslines had all been consulted over the installation of the speed humps.
Cr Lisa Price added that further traffic counts would be organised now that the humps had been installed.
"Service Road South is a long, straight road, and it would appear that this entices many motorists to drive too fast. Having these two speed humps to contend with will certainly have an impact in reducing vehicle speed in the road.
"We look forward to the results of the next traffic count, and hope that the excessive speeds recorded during the previous counts will not be repeated. Safety for all road users is paramount," Cr Price concluded.
